ISO 45001:2018 is a globally recognized certification that sets the benchmark for occupational health and safety (OH&S) management systems. Applicable to organizations of all sizes and types, it emphasizes the importance of creating a safe and healthy work environment. This standard not only focuses on the organization itself but also considers the broader supply chain, ensuring that contractors, suppliers, and other external workers are included in its safety management scope.
To achieve this certification, organizations undergo a rigorous two-stage audit process, evaluating workplace conditions, practices, and hazard identification. ISO does not issue certifications or conduct conformity assessments. Instead, ISO certified third-party entities, carry out ISO audits. These external auditors evaluate businesses and their operations to ensure compliance with standards and an unbiased assessment.
The certification remains valid for three years, subject to yearly partial audits to ensure ongoing compliance. At the end of this term, organizations can undergo a comprehensive audit process for recertification, which is more detailed than interim annual audits. Furthermore, to ensure its global relevance, ISO standards, including ISO 45001, undergo a systematic review every five years.
